BUILDING FAITH

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. Dec 2010

This page is set aside for a major exhibition, Building Faith, opening on 3 December 2010 at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Bathurst, NSW. This is my 50th solo exhibition and is a personal survey that will encompass some of the religious architecture encountered in my travels since 1972.

The exhibition will look at temples from India, mosques from North African countries such as Morocco and Tunisia, ancient temples from Egypt and examples of Christian architecture including many of the Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals in Europe and Britain.

In addition to the obvious spiritual quality of religious architecture a secondary theme is emerging as this work proceeds. I am constantly struck by the humanistic references found in religious building. For example, at the church of San Juan de los Reyes in Toledo is the most amazing collection of gargoyles, one of which is in the form of a monk perpetually bent in prayer. Such portrayal of the human condition is also found in Hindu and Jain temples.

The range of media will include working studies in charcoal, coloured pencil and pastels and final works in oils, gouache and acrylics. As work is completed it will be posted on this page.

WORKS ON THIS PAGE ARE FOR SALE unless otherwise stated. Please quote the code number shown in each image’s caption.
